Drill Locally? Research Paper Topic

I read an article a couple days ago that somewhere in North Dakota there is a whole lot of shell oil, official guestimators say that there is enough to sustain the US for about 250 years.  We have the technology today to go and get it, but we are not right now.  I will not hide that I have a bias on this, but I will look for all the information I can as to why we are not/should not get it.  What do you think guys? To drill or not to drill?

  1. I think this is a great topic! It's something that effects all of us and I think we all are wondering why we aren't taking advantage of this resource in our very own backyard.

  2. I like your topic. It also sounds like something you are very interested in which will help in the process. I have never fully understood why we don't drill more at home and I think it is ridiculous that we have such high gas prices. I think it is even more ridiculous that Utah usually has the highest gas prices in the nation, explain that one to me.

  3. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the reason we haven't drilled locally is that it would environmentally devastating. We don't mind making a country on the other side of the earth a wasteland to feed our habits but we won't live like that. Actually, I'm not sure if anything I'm saying is accurate because I haven't looked into the topic at all. I'm just parroting things I've heard.
Although my firm opinion is that looking into alternative energy sources is probably the best practice. I would much rather see funding go to alternative practices than to drilling locally.

  4. This topic definitely presents a good argument! I agree with Rachel that the best option is to probably find an alternative oil source, but drilling oil locally would definitely save on gas prices. Until another universally effective source is discovered, however, why not make use with the resources we do have? But how come they haven't already started drilling? Are there more negative consequences to the environment from this decision? I'm intrigued to see what you discover!

  5. Interesting topic- I definitely feel that the U.S. needs to be self-sufficient in producing fuels, because the virtually monopoly that the Middle East has on fossil fuels is dangerous. I think many nations, including the U.S., are too afraid of OPEC raising fuel prices to take full and necessary action to punish problematic Middle Eastern countries. I think the most ideal situation would be if the U.S. were able to create enough alternative fuel sources like Rachel and Eliza were saying, to sustain itself. If that didn't work out, I believe that drilling for U.S. oil would be better than living in fear and at the mercy of oil tycoons in the Middle East.
